Solid Waste Apprentice (Level A)


Course Description:

This is a 20-hour training course designed to prepare students to carry out the duties of an Apprentice Operator and to pass the Arkansas Division of Environmental Quality Apprentice (Level A) licensure exam.

Learning Outcomes:

  • The students will develop awareness of basic skills and knowledge of operating a solid waste facility in Arkansas.
  • The student will develop an awareness of APC&EC Rules that govern solid waste in Arkansas.
  • Will understand the responsibility for solid waste management in Arkansas
  • Will understand the purpose for integrated municipal solid waste management
  • Will understand the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D
  • Will understand 8 CAR § 60 (Rule 22) for the management of non-hazardous solid waste
  • Will understand the procedures for screening of all solid waste to exclude hazardous and prohibited waste
  • Will understand the concerns for safety at all solid waste management facilities
  • Will understand the procedures for licensing of solid waste operators and
  • Environmental Officers in Arkansas
  • Will understand the principles for operating and managing Subtitle D solid waste facilities in Arkansas

Must Know:

  • Attendance is mandatory for all
  • Must pass both written and practical exams with 70% or better for certification to be awarded
  • Daily breaks are scheduled – please bring or plan to get lunch
