Trenching Safety Course
Course Description:
This 8-hour course is designed for employees who perform or supervise trenching and excavation activities. Participants learn to recognize the serious hazards associated with excavation work and the protective measures necessary to reduce the risk of cave-ins, engulfment, hazardous atmospheres, and other injuries. Topics include trenching and excavation hazards, soil classification, sloping, benching, shoring and shielding systems, access and egress, spoil-pile placement, water accumulation, underground utilities, atmospheric hazards, confined-space considerations, inspections, and changing site conditions.

Learning Outcomes:
- Identify excavation and trenching hazards, including cave-ins, hazardous atmospheres, water accumulation, underground utilities, and unsafe soil conditions.
- Determine appropriate protective measures, including sloping, benching, shoring, shielding, access and egress, and other safe work practices.
Must Know:
- Attendance is mandatory for all
- Must pass both written and practical exams with 70% or better for certification to be awarded
- Daily breaks are scheduled – please bring or plan to get lunch
