Wastewater Chlorine Safety Courses

Course Description:

This 8-hour course is designed for employees who work with or around chlorine in water, wastewater, industrial, and other occupational settings. Participants learn about the common uses of chlorine; its physical and chemical characteristics; and the hazards associated with chlorine in dry, liquid, and gaseous forms. Topics include health effects of exposure, routes of entry into the body, exposure prevention, safe handling and storage of compressed-gas cylinders and containers, hazard recognition, leak detection, emergency response considerations, and selection and use of appropriate PPE. Participants also receive instruction in the selection and proper use of Chlorine Institute Emergency Kits A and B, as applicable.

Learning Outcomes:

• Identify the physical and chemical properties of chlorine, routes of exposure, associated health hazards, and appropriate preventive measures.
• Demonstrate appropriate PPE selection, leak-detection practices, safe cylinder handling, and proper use of applicable Chlorine Institute Emergency Kits.

Must Know:

• Attendance is mandatory for all
• Must pass both written and practical exams with 70% or better for certification to be awarded
• Daily breaks are scheduled – please bring or plan to get lunch
• This course includes practical instruction involving chlorine safety equipment; participants should wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes for hands-on activities.
