Water/Wastewater Operator Safety Courses

Course Description:

This 8-hour course is designed specifically for water and wastewater operators and other employees who may encounter a wide range of occupational hazards while operating and maintaining treatment facilities, collection systems, distribution systems, pump stations, and related equipment. Topics include slips, trips and falls; chemical health and physical hazards; hazard communication; bloodborne pathogens; electrical and mechanical hazards; lockout/tagout of energized systems; PPE; and job hazard analysis. The course emphasizes practical safety practices that operators can apply to routine maintenance, treatment operations, chemical handling, and other daily work activities.

Learning Outcomes:

• Identify common safety and health hazards associated with water and wastewater treatment, collection, distribution, and maintenance activities.
• Apply appropriate hazard-control measures, including PPE, lockout/tagout, chemical safety practices, and job hazard analysis, to routine operator activities.

Must Know:

• Attendance is mandatory for all
• Must pass both written and practical exams with 70% or better for certification to be awarded
• Daily breaks are scheduled – please bring or plan to get lunch
• Participants are encouraged to bring questions or examples of safety hazards encountered at their water or wastewater facility.
